Driver arrested in downtown South Bend New Year's crash

SOUTH BEND — A 33-year-old South Bend man was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated after a collision at 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 300 block of North Lafayette Boulevard. The man was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail. The accident happened when the suspect, going south on the northbound-only street, struck a northbound vehicle attempting to make a left turn into a service station. After striking that vehicle, the southbound driver struck a second vehicle stopped at the entry to the gas station. All three drivers were given blood and alcohol tests due to the possible serious injuries involved, police said. The driver of the first vehicle suffered minor bleeding, while the driver of the second vehicle complained of pain. Police said no injuries were reported to the driver of the third vehicle.
