A South Bend basement fire was quickly controlled Tuesday afternoon, but not before investigators found that a space heater was the culprit — one that was placed too close to flammable items. The fire was reported in the 600 block of South 24th Street at 4:48 p.m., according to a city press release. Arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from a small bedroom in the basement. There were no injuries to either occupants or firefighters.
