Steel haulers, long doubles, and triple trailers are banned on the Indiana Toll Road until 7 p.m. Wednesday due to the wind and snow. This is for the entire length of the highway. The winter weather wreaked havoc on interstates in the area Tuesday morning. Both lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near the Portage exit have reopened. They had been closed after a semi-truck jackknifed, an Indiana State Police dispatcher said about 11:45 a.m. Dispatch said earlier that there had been several slide-offs and crashes along the Toll Road and her office was “very busy.” The extent of injuries is unknown. Also, along Interstate 94 in Michigan, there have been several weather-related crashes Tuesday morning causing some closures and long backups on the interstate, the Michigan Department of Transportation reports. A Michigan transportation department spokesman said that all lanes of eastbound I-94 in Van Buren County at the Michigan 51 exit, Exit 56, just east of Paw Paw, now are open. They were closed because of four jackknifed semis with a car stuck underneath one of them. There still is no word of the extent of injuries. The Jaws of Life was used, WSBT confirms. Eastbound I-94 at the Mattawan on-ramp in Van Buren County was closed as two jack-knifed semis blocked that lane. It is now open. The Michigan transportation department spokesman said both lanes of eastbound I-94 at Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo County are open after being closed due to a jack-knifed semi. This crash was located between mile markers 80 and 85. More slide-offs were reported on eastbound I-94 near the 35th Street/Galesburg exit causing lane closures and delays. Westbound I-94 wass closed at Mile Marker 88 near Climax in Kalamazoo County for a three-semi crash. Eastbound I-94 also is backed up. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route. Also, WSBT has confirmed that Interstate 196 was closed southbound near the 18 mile marker as a semi jackknifed there and was blocking both lanes. Both are now open. Motorists are advised to travel with caution, reduce their speeds and seek alternative routes, the transportation department spokesman said.
