SOUTH BEND – The St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office has charged 43-year-old Mark Smith with four felonies and two other crimes for a Thursday morning burglary in Clay Township. Smith faces charges of Class C felony burglary and two counts of Class D felony theft, along with the Class C felony charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. He faces an additional misdemeanor charge for criminal conversation and is also charged with being a habitual offender. Smith was arrested Thursday morning after police found him near a burglarized home on Colony Drive. Police say he broke into cars in the area and used a remote garage-door opener to break into a home. According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, Smith has had four pervious convictions for theft and drug possession. Bond for Smith was set at $1,000 and he is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
