South Bend firefighters bring quick end to basement fire

Smoke was coming from attic vents when South Bend firefighters arrived Saturday night at a house fire in the 700 block of South Kentucky Street. Firefighters determined the fire began in the basement of the unoccupied house about 7:30 p.m. The fire was under control in 12 minutes, according to a department report. Damages were estimated at $5,000.
