According to Indiana State police, a fatal single vehicle accident occurred Saturday between 4 and 4:30 a.m. in LaPorte County. Police say, Joshua L. Lewis, 26, of Michigan City, was speeding westbound on the two-lane road of Woodlawn Avenue in Michigan City when he lost control of his vehicle. The 1995 Chrysler Concorde crossed the roadway to the eastbound lane, and back to the west lane before running through 30 feet of the 10-foot-high perimeter fence of Indiana State Prison’s Lakeside Correctional Center. The vehicle hit a pine tree, went into an embankment and finally came to rest in the correctional center parking lot. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office. The cause of death was massive head and chest injuries. Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash. Lewis was not wearing a seatbelt. Michigan City Police Department, Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County Coroner’s Office, and Lakeside Correctional Center and Michigan City State Prison personnel assisted with this accident.
