A South Bend church is hoping to break its 2009 record food collection during this weekend — all in an effort to help the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. Christ the King Lutheran Church is collecting food in a semi that's being driven around South Bend to receive contributions of non-perishable food items. In 2009, the church collected 4,000 pounds of food. Thursday, the truck was at McKinley Primary Center, where students helped with the food drive. Donations are being accepted until noon Sunday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 17195 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Non-perishable food items can include canned fish and meat, canned vegetables and fruits, dry cereals, dry pastas, fruit jelly, dried beans, macaroni and cheese, mayonnaise, pancake/waffle mix, rice, peanut butter and canned soups. The Food Bank of Northern Indiana works with more than 200 agencies in northern Indiana to distribute food to those in need.
