OSCEOLA — Police and fire crews blocked off an area along Beech Road late Sunday after a sport utility vehicle crashed into a house, causing a natural gas leak. The accident happened in the 59300 block of Beech about 10:45 p.m. when the SUV smashed into the house, damaging the gas meter, according to WSBT-TV Reporter Clifton French, at the scene. Three females inside the SUV were not injured. They told WSBT three deer ran into the road, causing the driver to swerve to avoid hitting the animals. No one was home inside the house, and the homeowner returned about an hour later. NIPSCO was called to assist with the leak, St. Joseph County dispatch said. In the meantime, the road was blocked to all traffic because utility workers were waiting for road crews to assist them in shutting off the line.
