MISHAWAKA — A high-speed chase across Mishawaka and parts of St. Joseph County ended in the front yard of a home on Geyer Avenue, after what police say began as a gun incident. Mishawaka Police were first sent to an address in the 1500 block of Liberty Drive after complaints someone was displaying a gun. But that address, at the West Jefferson Apartments, was just where the chase began. Officers from several agencies followed the vehicle north to Day Road, then east for several miles. One officer estimated speeds at 100 mph as the vehicle, occasionally driving on the wrong side of the road, flew through Easter Sunday traffic. The chase headed back west on McKinley and south on Capital, as police officers set out stop sticks at the Elm Road entrance ramps for the St. Joseph Valley Parkway. But before the vehicle got there, the driver turned westbound onto Dragoon Trail. As police cars drew closer, the driver pulled into a Mishawaka alley and tried to head back east on Delaware Street, ultimately crashing in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of Geyer. Mishawaka Police say two people are in custody following the incident. The driver has been charged with operating while intoxicated, while the passenger faces an intimidation charge. Police said the owner of the car was a friend of the suspects. She reported the car stolen, but police have not charged anyone for that crime. Officers also found a gun that they believe was thrown out of the vehicle during the pursuit, and investigated at least one accident at Lincoln Way and Capital that happened because of the chase. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
