South Bend firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1800 block of Johnson Street this morning. Two people were in the house at the time of the fire, but they got out of the home safely. The entire second floor of the house was damaged and there is water damage throughout the house. “I just smelled smoke,” said Ty Juan Hawkins, who was in the house. “Me and my granny got up and we ran out of the room, and I grabbed my jacket and just ran out of the house.” The call came in at 5:50 a.m. Firefighters had the fire under control in about 20 minutes. Fire crews do not yet know the cause of the blaze.
