Update: Palin, others, defend Williams after firing

October 21, 2010

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sarah Palin is among the Republicans coming to the defense of Juan Williams after his firing from NPR.

In a Twitter message, Palin says the radio network shouldn't get any federal tax dollars if it's going to operate as what she calls "intolerant, private radio."

Williams was fired from his job as an NPR commentator after he said on Bill O'Reilly's show on Fox News that he gets nervous when he gets on a plane and sees other passengers wearing Muslim attire.

NPR CEO Vivian Schiller says the network's reporters and news analysts shouldn't offer controversial opinions. And she says whatever feelings Williams has about Muslims should be between him and -- in her words -- "his psychiatrist or his publicist."

But among those siding with Williams is Whoopi Goldberg -- who had walked off of ABC's "The View" after Bill O'Reilly's own comments about Muslims last week.

Goldberg says Williams was just making the point that he gets "nervous" -- and she says firing him for that is "kind of ridiculous."
