Goshen College handling flu outbreak

GOSHEN - Officials are Goshen College are keeping their fingers crossed that the worst is over. The flu bug, recently hit the campus...affecting students and staff alike. All there are being asked to take precautions, to keep the spread of it, at bay.

Goshen College Senior Hannah Roth had a close encounter with the flu virus. Several of her housemates came down with the bug.

“I live in an on-campus house and five girls so far have gotten the flu in my house, and they just have been like getting really sick,” said Roth. “It’s just one or two days that they have been sick. It happens really fast, and then it’s over.”

Dozens of students came down with flu-like symptoms last week.

“We had around 50 cases from last week, which would be about 15 percent of our student body,” said Associate Dean of Students, Launa Rohrer.

“I know several people who have had it and have actually hung out with them, a couple hours later they started throwing up, and so I was a little scared but then I never got it,” said Marshal Watson, a sophomore at Goshen College..

Several students that we talked to say they also know of someone who has contracted the flu, and as expected, are taking precautions to prevent from getting it themselves.

“I have been trying to wash my hands more and use hand sanitizers,” said Kaleb Batten, a junior. “It’s really just kind of a matter of being smart and using regular precautions you have heard of before.”

The college put out information across campus about the flu bug, including articles in the school newspaper.

“They definitely communicated well through The Communicator and e-mail to wash your hands and to make sure to have good hygiene and to take care of yourself,” said Jeffery Moore, a sophomore. “I am not too worried about it.”

Several facility members and teachers also came down with flu-like symptoms last week.
