Wabash County crash kills North Manchester man, injures five

November 16, 2010|WSBT-TV Report

A multiple-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in a road construction zone on Indiana 113, south of County Road 200 North in Wabash County, killed Roger Prater, 58 of North Manchester.

Indiana State Police report another North Manchester man, Brandt Shambarger, 47, failed to stop his semi in a lane of traffic halted by an Indiana Department of Transportation flagman.

Shamberger’s semi plowed into a van that had stopped for the flagman, causing a chain reaction crash involving a minivan, car and pickup truck. All those vehicles were stopped in the northbound lane, waiting for the flagman to clear southbound traffic, according to police.

Shambarger was not injured.

The injured included Wanda Frehese, 74, of Urbana, Ind., Monica Harrell, 43, of Roanoke, In. and Marcia Summers, 43, of Urbana, Ind., Vicki Ley, 55, of Leesburg and Phillip Hill, 44, of Swayzee, Ind.

Frehese, Harrell and Summers were airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Ley and Hill were taken by ambulance to Wabash County Hospital.

Police said Prater was not wearing a seat belt and believe that more fatalities in this crash were prevented because others involved were wearing seat belts.
