LA PORTE COUNTY - An attempted escape from the La Porte County Security Complex was stopped short Wednesday after a K-9 officer at the jail spotted him, police say.

According to a release from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was leaving the complex just before 10 a.m. Wednesday when he noticed a pair of unclothed male legs hanging out of a light on the north side of the building.

Police say 30-year-old Anthony Ferris of La Porte had been physically combative all night Tuesday and was placed in an isolation cell for his own safety and for the safety of the jail staff.  Wednesday morning, Ferris asked for permission to use the bathroom facilities in the isolation cell, and when he came back into camera view, an employee in main control alerted staff a vent in the ceiling had somehow been opened and Ferris escaped.

Once he was spotted, Ferris made no attempt to comply and tried to crawl back into the opening once a deputy attempted to use a taser to incapacitate him.

When the taser probe did not make contact with Ferris, he was able to move back up into the opening. Ferris, naked from his stay in the isolation cell, crawled around a small area between the isolation cell in the processing and outer north wall of the complex for several minutes as deputies inside and outside attempted to find a way to capture him.

Once Ferris was located again, he was combative and did not comply with any commands.

Finally, after assistance from several departments, he was finally taken into custody. He was transported to the La Porte Hospital for minor injuries he sustained during the attempted escape.

Ferris was charged additionally with Resisting Law Enforcement an A Misdemeanor, Escape, a D Felony and Intimidation a D felony.
