South Bend police arrest man after fight, stabbing, over money

December 06, 2010|Tribune Staff Report

SOUTH BEND — Police were called to the Super Marcardo Rosales on South Michigan Street late Saturday night after a man walked in bleeding from two cuts on his face.

The 53-year-old man told police he was in a fight with a friend who owed him money at an apartment nearby in the 200 block of Indiana Avenue.

The man said he went to collect money from his friend and, after the friend refused, an argument broke out, ultimately leading to a physical fight.

Police went to the apartment and found blood in the hallway as well as inside. A woman in the apartment told police she had witnessed the fight and said the suspect told the victim he would "put this ( knife) through you."

Police say they were able to find the suspect nearby, although the man denied he had attacked anyone — until officers found a bloody utility knife in his pocket.

The suspect was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail, accused of aggravated assault. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries, which were not life-threatening.
