Lake-effect snow wallops Cass County

December 07, 2010|By John Paul (jpaul@wsbt.com)

CASS COUNTY - Local schools, even Southwestern Michigan College, got the day off Tuesday. Road crews have been out trying to stay on top of it. County police have been busy, too.

Sean Anderson was ready for his final exam and speech. After a 22-mile drive, he found out the hard way that it was a snow day.

Anderson said he never got the text alerts from the college.

"I looked at my phone. You're supposed to get something over the phone or email," he said. "I haven't got anything on my cell phone."

Campus grounds crews got it. They spent the day plowing the empty lots around campus.

"It's not that bad out today," said Anderson. "It was worse last night than it is today."

The decision to close campus was not related to the snowy conditions on campus. The problem was the secondary roads leading to the college.

While state highways in Cass County were plowed, secondary roads were a mess.

"Right around 5:30, 6 when everyone was going to work things were a little rough," said Officer Deven Lambart with Edwardsburg police

Calls kept Cass County dispatch busy all morning.

Between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon, county police responded to 34 accident calls.  Most were for slide-offs. Five accidents had minor injuries.

"The secondary road is where most people need to stay cautious," said Lambart.

No doubt, Sean took it easy on his 22-mile journey back home.
