Elkhart County police investigate another arson at Ox Bow Park

January 18, 2011|By John Paul (jpaul@wsbt.com)

ELKHART COUNTY — Someone set an outhouse on fire and tried to do the same to another outhouse early Friday morning at Ox Bow Park.

"It's sadness knowing that our park was once again struck with arson for the second time," said Ronda DeCaire, superintendent of operations for Elkhart County Parks.

DeCaire said Elkhart County Parks is seeking donations to replace a landmark tower targeted by vandals last year. On Tuesday she got a look at another trail of destruction, committed by vandals, early Friday morning.

The area where the outhouse once stood was blocked off with yellow caution tape after it burned to the ground. Authorities say arsonists also tried to set another outhouse on fire and ripped the doors out of another.

A sign ripped out of the ground was found just yards away in a stream.

The damage is bound to have some effect on the Boy Scouts Klondike Derby at the park. Groundskeepers cleared snow in anticipation of their arrival this Saturday.

"It would be better for them to be constructive instead of destructive," DeCaire said.

No one has been arrested, but investigators have several clues to work with.

Anyone with information should call police.
