January 23, 2011|By Ashley Henderson (ahenderson@wsbt.com)

SOUTH BEND -- Crews were on the scene of Concrete Asphalt Recycling in South Bend Sunday attempting to cap a propane leak believed to have been caused by a burglary.

According to South Bend Police dispatch, officers were called to the business in the 2900 block of Lathrop Street just before 11 a.m. on the report of a burglary.

While police were investigating, it was discovered that a 500-gallon propane tank on the grounds had been damaged by an excavator. It is believed that the person responsible for the burglary crashed the excavator. The tank, which is located on the outside of the building, was reported to be half-full before the leak.

South Bend Police and fire crews are on the scene.
