SOUTH BEND — South Bend fire crews battled two house fires where all occupants made it out safely. In the second fire, South Bend Police officers pulled an elderly woman through a bedroom window to safety.

South Bend Fire Department news releases give these details:

  • At 11:39 p.m. Friday, crews were called to 754 N. Cottage Grove Ave., after occupants of the house called 911 after seeing smoke in the house. Four children and at least one adult escaped safely. The fire began in the basement and caused approximately $1,500 in damage. The fire's cause is under investigation.
  • At 1:26 a.m. Saturday, a neighbor called 911 after they saw a nearby house at 314 S. Bendix Drive on fire. As fire crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke and fire inside the house, though it's believed the fire began in a bedroom.

The first arriving South Bend Police officers pulled an elderly woman through her bedroom window to safety. She suffered minor lacerations and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Others in the house also escaped the fire safely.
