Mishawaka mayor advises residents to stay off city streets

February 01, 2011|Tribune Staff Report

MISHAWAKA — Because of weather conditions, Mayor Dave Wood has asked motorists to stay off city streets unless absolutely necessary throughout the duration of the snowstorm.

The city is relying on minimal traffic to allow snow removal crews to clear streets, according to a news release. Wood said the first priority is to have clear streets for emergency personnel to respond as necessary.

Wednesday’s collection of trash and recycling has been delayed until Thursday, Wood said. Trash collection on each remaining day this week will be shifted one day, weather permitting, with Friday’s collection set to be completed Saturday.

The mayor reminds residents of the following:

— All city snow removal personnel and equipment have been deployed to work around the clock, concentrating their snow removal operations on main roads.

— If your vehicle is parked on a major traffic corridor, you are asked to move it to a driveway or a side street to allow the snow on major streets to be plowed back as far as possible to enable access for emergency response vehicles.

— A third ambulance has been deployed if needed in case of emergency and to maintain the necessary response to emergency calls.

— Public emergency departments are dispatching in accordance with their emergency procedures, which prioritizes the dispatch of emergency responses due to the time to respond.

— Residents are asked to clear snow around fire hydrants.

— Residents are asked to monitor local media and the city’s website, www.mishawaka.in.gov, for more Mishawaka updates.
