Security cameras catch truck smashing into Elkhart gas station

February 07, 2011|By Clifton French (cfrench@wsbt.com)

ELKHART Police say two men were injured when a truck crashed into a Bristol Street gas station on Monday afternoon.

One man was pinned between a cooler and a counter in Kathy’s Stop-n-Go and Subway at 1960 East Bristol Street.

Police say the 70-year-old man's foot slipped off the brake onto the accelerator causing him to jump the curb and crash through the wall.

"It was just a huge, huge crash," Owner Kathleen Kelly said.

Kelly was inside talking to a customer when the crash happened.

"We both ducked and glass, just glass went everywhere," she said.

Cameras caught the crash from several angles.  You can see the worker at the cash register get out of the way just before the truck smashes through.  But one customer couldn't get out of the way and ended up pinned inbetween a soft drink cooler and the counter.  Employees were able to free the man before emergency crews arrived.  He went to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to police, the driver was trapped for about 30 minutes but walked away from the crash with only minor injuries.  Police say he is not being charged with any crime and was not cited for any traffic violation.

The gas station was open about three hours after the crash.  The Subway stayed closed until Tuesday.

Kelly says she thinks the damage could cost more than $30,000.
