A roughly 24-foot by 40-foot awning over pumps at a Benton Township gas station collapsed Saturday afternoon under the heavy weight of snow/ice.

Benton Charter Township Fire and Police were called to the station at M-139 and I-94/Exit 28 at 1:50 p.m. Fortunately, the station was closed at the time, Fire Lt. James Fogarty told WSBT-TV.

Firefighters dug through the snow to make sure no one happened to be walking through the station lot when the awning collapsed. Fogarty said the station was closed because of other business reasons.

Two pumps were already missing from the station, and fortunately, Fogarty said, that’s where the most of the awning, snow and ice fell. Two other pumps were damaged.

“We broke the station’s front window to get into the station to shut the gas off right away and secured the utilities,” Fogarty said, stopping a potential gas leak or explosion.
