A 31-year-old Dowagiac man died late Monday morning as the car he was riding in swerved to miss a vehicle, crossed the center line and was struck by an oncoming pickup truck.
James Keys was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Michigan State Police news release.
Police say the crash occurred at M-43 and 68th Street/C.R. 380 in Van Buren County’s Geneva Township at 11:46 a.m.
The driver of a westbound car swerved to miss a vehicle that turned in front of them onto 68th Street/C.R. 380. After avoiding the turning vehicle, the car’s driver lost control and headed into oncoming traffic.
There, a pickup truck collided with the car on its passenger side. The car’s driver was taken to South Haven Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The truck’s driver, who police say was not wearing a seat belt, was seriously injured and was taken to Bronson Hospital.
