The quarterback for the New Prairie High School football team was arrested for allegedly hitting a tree with a vehicle after drinking alcohol and fleeing the crash site.
Justin Dutcher, 18, of Rolling Prairie was booked into the LaPorte County Jail on failure to stop at a property damage accident and underage drinking, both misdemeanors.
LaPorte County Sheriff's deputies just before 2 a.m. Saturday were called to the 6700 block of E. U-S 20.
A tree in a yard was partially uprooted and the abandoned vehicle sustained heavy front end damage, police said.
Police said a neighbor reported hearing the crash and seeing a male running from the vehicle along a wood line.
In his report, Deputy Andrew Hahn said the vehicle registration led investigators to the home of Wendy and Richard Dutcher.
Mrs. Dutcher reported her son was supposed to have the vehicle and be at a friend's house in New Carlisle, police said.
