DETROIT (AP) — Detroit is a risky place to deliver mail.
Postmaster Lloyd Wesley says there were 59 attacks by dogs last year, compared to 74 in Los Angeles and 10 in New York, both much larger cities. He says the injuries have been "horrific" and some mail carriers have retired.
The Detroit News says Wesley recently met with Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. to discuss the problem. The meeting followed an April 1 letter in which he wrote about "perilous hazards" caused by dogs running loose, especially pit bulls.
Wesley says it's "very bad." He says mail carriers also have been in the midst of gunfire at least three times since December.
