GRANGER -- Drivers were diverted Tuesday afternoon avoid the area of State Road 23 and Brick Road.
Crews working in the area hit a gas line, which sparked a large fire with flames that reached approximately 12 to 15 feet at one point.
As of 1:55 p.m., NIPSCO arrived to shut off the gas and the fire was extinguished.
Firefighters were worried about the flames spreading to trees or power lines. They were using foam and water to try to contain it until NIPSCO had arrived.
Traffic was shut down on S.R. 23 between Elm and Capital. Brick Road was closed at 23.
Around 2:30 p.m., the road was reopened and traffic was able to pass through again.
Police tell WSBT they believe there are no injuries.
