NILES — A body discovered by fishermen Sunday in the St. Joseph River near Niles was that of an Elkhart man, police said Wednesday.

Berrien County sheriff’s deputies identified him as Ray S. Moore, 53. They released no additional information, pointing out their investigation is continuing.

The body was discovered in the river near Bond Street, south of U. S. 12, officers reported. It was the second body to turn up in the river in as many days.

On Monday, a body believed to be that of 23-year-old James Woods Jr. was spotted by a pedestrian in the portion of the river running by the Notre Dame rowing team’s boathouse on Northside Boulevard in South Bend. It later was recovered near the shore at Howard Park.

According to police reports, Woods was last seen fleeing officers about 2 a.m. May 1 on the bank of the river near the Post 1167 VFW Hall. Apparently, he had stopped in the VFW parking lot after a traffic accident at Miami and Lincoln Way East.

Police reported Woods emerged from the auto when they approached and began to run. After a brief chase, officers lost sight of him and heard a splash in the river.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be drowning. There were no signs of blunt force trauma

Woods was tentatively identified by his clothing and tattoos. DNA results are expected to verify the body’s identity in about a week.
