NEW TRENTON, Ind. (AP) — Searchers have found the body of a 17-month-old Kentucky boy who fell into the Whitewater River when his parents' kayak capsized.
Indiana Conservation Officer William Browne said the body of Mitchell O'banion of Florence, Ky., was located about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Search and rescue crews found the body in the river near New Trenton, about 25 miles west of Cincinnati.
His parents, Carmen Sickmeier and Lawrence O'banion, released a statement earlier Saturday expressing gratitude to everyone involved in the search for the boy.
The kayak capsized Wednesday near the Franklin County community of Cedar Grove, about two miles upriver from where the body was found. Authorities have said the toddler's life jacket might not have been properly fastened. Browne says a life jacket wasn't found with the body.
