Kimmell driver collides with buggy in Middlebury

June 08, 2011|WSBT-TV Report

MIDDLEBURY — A 21-year-old Kimmell man told police he tried to pass slower traffic as he was driving north on S.R. 13, north of C.R. 26, Tuesday afternoon.

At that point, Cameron Shaffer realized he didn’t have enough time to pass because of oncoming traffic. He swerved and his 2004 Pontiac Grand Am struck a northbound buggy, causing it to roll on its side. A witness corroborated Shaffer's statement to police.

Shaffer’s car then went off the road and struck a fence and mailbox, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department news release.

The buggy’s driver, Laura Bontrager, 25, of Middlebury, had head and shoulder pain. Her two passengers, a 3-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy, both had head, face and neck pain. They were taken to Parkview LaGrange Hospital.
