SOUTH BEND — Seven apartments were damaged in an early-morning fire Wednesday at Castle Point Apartments. As firefighters arrived at 1710 Enchanted Forest at Castle Point Apartments at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, they found fire in a first floor apartment.

Police and firefighters went door-to-door to awaken residents. In all, 39 residents were quickly evacuated, according to John Vance, Clay Fire Territory chief.

Eight people were rescued from apartment balconies; six were rescued from inside the building. Several residents were treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation, Vance said. None required hospitalization. Three firefighters were taken to a hospital for treatment and were later released.

Several pets were rescued from apartments, including three cats.
