Gun fired in air outside commencement in Kalamazoo

June 10, 2011

KALAMZOO, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a handgun was fired into the air during a large fight outside a southwestern Michigan high school graduation ceremony.

Police in Kalamazoo say the fight happened about 9 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of Wings Stadium, which was hosting Kalamazoo Central High School's commencement.

No serious injuries were reported.

Witnesses told police that a group of people showed up at the ceremony and tried to start a fight with some in attendance at the ceremony. Security tried to make them leave but a group of people attending the commencement confronted the other group, and the fight began.

A 22-year-old man from Kalamazoo with a knife was arrested. Police later arrested an 18-year-old man from Kalamazoo who is suspected of shooting the gun.
