Crash critically injures Ligonier teen

June 21, 2011|WSBT-TV Report

A two-vehicle crash Monday evening about 10 miles south of Goshen left a Ligonier teen with critical injuries.

Yaritza Pena, 17,  was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta westbound on C.R. 52 just after 5:30 p.m. Jeremy Hochstetler, 31, of Cromwell, was driving a 2001 Ford F-350 pickup truck northbound on C.R. 43.

Police say at the C.R. 52/C.R. 43 intersection, there is no stop sign for north/south traffic on C.R. 43. After stopping for the east/west stop sign on C.R. 52, police say Pena pulled out directly in front of Hochstetler, causing a right-angle collision.

Pena was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment of severe head and neck injuries, where she’s listed in critical condition, according to a nursing supervisor.

Pena’s passenger, 50-year-old Aurora Pena, was taken by ambulance to Parkview Noble Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The hospital had no information on her condition early Tuesday morning.

Hochstetler was not injured. All people involved were wearing seat belts, an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department news release noted.

The crash remains under investigation.
