Police: Indiana woman left 2 kids in car on hot day

July 15, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis woman faces neglect and battery charges for allegedly leaving her two young sons in a car on a sweltering day and punching a woman who called police about the youngsters' plight.

WRTV-TV reports 21-year-old Heather M. Query wept throughout Thursday's court hearing on the charges.

Police said Query left her boys, ages four and one, in a car with its windows rolled up while she shopped at a supermarket Monday evening. When she exited, she allegedly punched a woman standing near her car who was worried about the children.

It's unclear how long the boys were in the car, but police said the temperature was 88 degrees and the heat index was 97 degrees.

Query's stepfather, Andrew Gomez, says she made a mistake but is "not a monster."
