Pendleton prison on lockdown after fatal attack

PENDLETON, Ind. (AP) — State prison officials say a prisoner at the Pendleton Correctional Facility has died after he was stabbed by two other offenders.

Pendleton Superintendent Keith Butts says 35-year-old Daniel D. Dewitt of Columbus died Saturday morning at a hospital in nearby Anderson.

The maximum security section of the prison has been placed on lockdown. Prison officials wouldn't say if the weapon had been recovered.

Butts says Dewitt was attacked about 6:30 a.m. when offenders were released to the gym for recreation. Two suspects have been placed in segregation. An autopsy will be performed in Muncie.

Officials say Dewitt serving 17 and 10-year sentences for drug dealing and felon in possession of a firearm out of Bartholomew County. He was due for release in November 2017.
