Two nearly drown at Silver Beach

July 24, 2011|WSBT-TV Report

A father and daughter swimming at Silver Beach in St. Joseph Sunday are counting their blessings after nearly drowning.

Police say that the father, a 49-year-old Chicago man, was trying to help his 14 year old daughter who was struggling in the water. A good samaritan got to the girl and rescued her, but then the dad got into trouble and became unconscious.

Two Elkhart County women tried to rescue him but he was too heavy, so they screamed to attract attention. That's when the same man who rescued the girl went back in, and with the help of another man brought him to shore.

That same good samaritan performed CPR on the man, and police say he is conscious and alert at the hospital.

There were no lifeguards on duty at the time.

Police say the quick thinking actions of all the bystanders involved helped save two lives.
