MICHIGAN CITY -- A Michigan City teenager is dead after a birthday party turned into a shooting.  Police say the victim, 17-year-old Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins, was an innocent bystander.

"Keisha loved everybody," Julia Flowers, Hodges Hawkins' aunt said.

Inside of Flower's home, family of Hodges Hawkins look through pictures of their lost loved one.  All the while, they're asking why this could happen.

"Why did they do this?" Flowers said. "How were they somewhere at a party shooting into a crowd?"

It was Sunday night when Hodges Hawkins and her cousins went to a birthday party at Krueger Memorial Park.  A party that ended when a fight broke out inside of the park pavilion.  But that fight led outside and eventually to a shooting.

Hodges Hawkins' family says Ne'Keisha was in the wrong place and those shots took her life.

"This girl was like, it's Keisha, it's Keisha, we just ran up the hill and we lost her," Quayshaun Stevens, Hodges Hawkins cousin said.

On Tuesday, Stevens remember his cousin as a volleyball and basketball player; a talented dance singer and all around jokester.

"We never expected anything like this to happen to Keisha because Keisha was always the uplifting one, the one who always made a sad moment happy," Stevens said.

Police have arrested 18-year-old Cameron Kent for her death, he is being charged with reckless homicide, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness.

An 18-year-old man was also shot in the leg.

Police say the investigation is still open, but won't say if they are looking for more suspects.
