Indiana group honoring actor Glover for union support

August 05, 2011

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Actor and political activist Danny Glover will be honored as this year's recipient of an award named for labor union organizer and Indiana native Eugene Debs.

The Terre Haute-based Eugene V. Debs Foundation will present the 2011 Debs Award to Glover during its Sept. 24 banquet.

The Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/oSTyyO ) the foundation selected Glover for his humanitarian efforts and his support of workers' rights.

The star of the "Lethal Weapon" movies visited Terre Haute twice in 2009, joining a rally for striking factory workers and the city's Labor Day parade. Glover spoke in February at an Indiana Statehouse rally during the boycott by Democratic legislators.

Debs grew up in Terre Haute, becoming a prominent union leader in the late 1800s and a Socialist Party presidential candidate in the early 1900s.
