Investigation ongoing in Wakarusa man's electrocution

August 05, 2011|By Jason Overholt (joverholt@wsbt.com)

Investigators are working to confirm the circumstances surrounding the electrocution death of a worker on an Elkhart County farm on Wednesday.

Willard Zimmerman, 44, of Wakarusa was welding inside a silo at a farm in the 14800 block of County Road 18 when he was electrocuted. A coworker called 911.

Elkhart County Coroner John White says they do not have an official cause of death yet. Their investigation suggest that Zimmerman, who was working in a confined space and lying on steel, accidentally rolled over onto the electrode on his welder and electrocuted himself.

White said they still need to compare the welder to a burn pattern on Zimmerman’s arm and rule out the possibility the welder was defective before they can say for sure that is how he died.

Zimmerman was working as a contract laborer for Zimmerman Sales and Service, a farm equipment and supply company.
