Mishawaka Avenue was closed from Elm Street to Indiana Avenue for hours Monday because of what Mishawaka police are calling a "major" gas leak.
Lt. Tim Williams with Mishawaka police said an independent contractor hit a 4-inch gas line. That line is connected to three more lines, so it was a large leak.
NIPSCO was on scene the entire afternoon fixing the leak. The road was reopened shortly before 7 p.m.
