SOUTH BEND — No new information was available today regarding the police-related shooting that occurred Saturday after the robbery of the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union branch at 3457 Portage Ave.
The suspect in the robbery was shot by a South Bend police officer at Portage and Cleveland Road, a block away from the bank. The suspect, 39, reportedly underwent surgery for a gunshot wound at a local hospital Saturday afternoon. However, no condition report on the man has been made available.
The identify of the officer involved also has not been released. A call to the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was not returned today.
Potential charges against the robbery suspect were not filed today. The Tribune is not naming the suspect unless charges are filed.
According to witnesses, the suspect pulled out a handgun that was behind his back and pointed it at the officer before being shot.
