Purdue adopts new policy for grieving students

August 23, 2011

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University has adopted a new policy aimed at helping students cope with a relative's death during the school year.

Purdue approved its student bereavement policy last spring, and it took effect in the fall semester. The policy allows Purdue students touched by a loved one's death to contact the Dean of Students office so an official leave notice can be sent to instructors.

That notice ensures that the student has the ability to make up missed coursework after returning from leave to attend a funeral.

The policy includes guidelines for how much time a student can miss based on how closely the student is related to the deceased relative as well as where the death occurred.

Students who lose a non-family member also can petition for a grief absence.
