NILES — A suspicious fire late Monday afternoon in Niles has police and fire crews on high alert.

Niles firefighters responded to flames coming from the former United Fixtures building off Howard and 9th streets. It’s not the first time fires have erupted at the site, fire officials said. Niles Standard Co. owns the building.

Niles fire officials said the now vacant building attracts scrappers to steal leftover metal. Because some metal may still be electrically charged, a fire could break out at any time if someone tampers with the metal.

Now fire crews are asking for your help to crack down on this problem. If anyone sees suspicious vehicles or people around the company’s property, call Niles Police at 683-1313.
