South Bend man dies of injuries from house fire

September 12, 2011|WSBT-TV Report

A man pulled from a burning house on Wednesday has died from his injuries.

A Memorial Hospital spokesman confirmed to WSBT Johnny B. Daniels, 62, died Saturday.

Authorities say Daniels was unconscious when medics arrived on scene about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at a home at 1042 W. LaSalle Ave., where Daniels lived.

South Bend Fire Chief Howard Buchanon said doctors had Daniels in a decompression chamber in hopes of getting his breathing back.

Daniels was the only person home at the time of the fire.

Buchanon said the cause of the fire likely could go in the books as undetermined. Firefighters recovered a space heater and humidifier from the home, but it is unclear if they played any roles in the blaze, Buchanon said. Still, it added enough insight for firefighters to believe the fire likely could have been electrical in nature.
