MISHAWAKA – A man is in police custody after a domestic dispute that turned into a standoff and put a nearby school into lockdown.
This happened around 8:45 a.m., say police. SWAT was called to the 700 block of Battell when the man refused to come out of the home. Battell Elementary was put on lockdown as a precaution.
“We appreciate the prompt response of the Mishawaka Police Department and the guidance that they provided to the school corporation during the lockdown,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Terry E. Barker in a news released early Tuesday afternoon. “Our students were very patient and well behaved throughout the morning. Perhaps most importantly, our staff and students were able to keep Battell Elementary School safe and secure at all times by following our standard lockdown procedure as directed."
After reaching the man on the phone, police were able to get him to come out of the house. The situation ended around 10:20.
