Knox High School grieves over student death

October 11, 2011|By Jessica Farrell (jfarrell@wsbt.com)

KNOX – Knox High School is in mourning after one of their own was killed Monday night in a crash.

Andrew Shearin died around 9:46 p.m., according to police. He was traveling east on State Road 8 when he struck a utility pole on the south side.

Police say it is unknown what caused the fatal crash, but drugs and alcohol were not involved.

Elizabeth Ratliff, Knox High School principal, said that Shearin was a junior at Knox and was the drum major for the high school marching band.

Ratliff says he was a “gifted music composer” and received rewards for his musical talent.

“Drew received awards in 2010 from the Indiana Educators Association, Composition Competition for his 2010 Concert Band Composition, and 2011 Choral/Vocal composition,” said Ratliff.

Additional support from local churches and a crisis team helped the school counselors, says Ratliff, with students that are grieving the loss of Shearin.

“Drew was an extremely popular and engaging student and will be greatly missed by his peers, our staff, and the Knox community,” said Ratliff. “We also offer our heartfelt sympathies to the family for their loss.”

Police say the crash is still under investigation.
