NEW BUFFALO – According to New Buffalo police, a kayaker who went missing Saturday in Lake Michigan has yet to be found as of Monday morning.
The man – identified as 18-year-old Mitchell Fajman of Channahon, Illinois by the Coast Guard – and two of his friends were kayaking off the coast of New Buffalo Saturday afternoon inside the break wall when high waves caused their boats to capsize.
Fajman’s friends were rescued, but with the dangerous high winds and wave conditions the Coast Guard was unable to safely bring Fajman back to shore.
Throughout the day Saturday and into Sunday morning, the Coast Guard searched for Fajman but had no luck.
“After a probable search area is saturated several times with a maximum number of assets, resources, and crew effort, and a person is missing is still not located, a decision is made to suspend a case,” said a Coast Guard spokesperson.
