SOUTH BEND - Family, friends, and community members braved strong winds and rain Thursday to remember those who lost their lives to domestic violence this year in our area.

Loved ones planted flowers outside the YWCA Women's Shelter in memory of Kim White-Stout, Marsha Cocot, Christine Freeman, and Michael Gensinger.

“It is our hope that the memory garden reassures family members of victims that their loved one is never forgotten,” said YWCA President and CEO Linda Baechle.

"We all love them and miss them very much,” said Janice Kidder, whose niece, Kim White-Stout, was killed in March. “I just think it’s neat they did it and that a good crowd came out today.”

Along with remembering local victims of domestic violence, the YWCA also remembered the 62 men, women, and young children who died as a result of domestic violence statewide over the last year.

Organizers also offered a prayer of remembrance.

The ceremony was part of the YWCA’s recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
