Niles teachers are being asked to take a pay cut to help the school district deal with financial problems.
Superintendent Richard Weigel tells our news partners at the South Bend Tribune he's proposing an 8 percent pay cut for teachers.
It's the first time teachers in the school district have been asked to take a cut in pay.
Contract negotiations have been going on for ten months now.
Weigel says Niles schools will be in a deficit by the end of the 2012-2013 school year unless there are major changes.
A negotiator representing the teacher's union says he doesn't believe the situation is as bad as Weigel claims.
