The rocket science behind frozen ice cream

November 15, 2011|By Ed Ernstes (ernstes@wsbt.com)

NAPPANEE – Some people would say it is not rocket science when it comes to making ice cream, but a new ice cream shop in Nappanee may be the exception.

Rocket Science Ice Cream at 1054 West Market has come up with a new scientific way to make your choice of frozen ice cream instantly right before your eyes.

At first glance it may look like some kind of scientific experiment, but you may be surprised to learn it is a new way to make ice cream.

“We freeze it so it is the freshest ice cream you can get,” said Rocket Science Ice Cream employee Rochelle Slabaugh. “It’s made right before your eyes, and it’s the best.”

The way it is set up, the customer picks which fresh ingredients they would like and then all of ingredients are mixed up with an ice cream based mix

Then they are flash frozen with liquid nitrogen which is set at 320 degrees below zero.

“It is rocket science,” said regular customer Larry Andrews. “When the ice cream is being frozen, it looked just like a rocket taking off into the air, and it’s exciting to watch and the taste is just amazing.

With the different number of ingredients that they have, they also say there are almost an infinite number of combinations. Customers can come into the ice cream shop for years and get something different every time they come in.
