Outstanding Student Athlete: Brionna Barnett

December 01, 2011|By Pete Byrne (pmbyrne@wsbt.com)

ELKHART – Ask Memorial coach Steve Scott what makes Brionna Barnett such a great player and he can talk all day.

"Nothing fazes her,” Scott says. "You can't tell if she's got 20 points or two points. That's her absolute best attribute. She just plays and she almost never plays bad."

Earlier this season, Barnett eclipsed the 1,000 point mark. For a point guard who's had division one talent around her, demanding the ball her entire career is pretty impressive.

"It's a great accomplishment knowing that I'm on the list with other Memorial basketball players who achieved that goal," says Barnett.

A player like Akyah Taylor, who is on that list, is now a freshman at Michigan State.

"She played with two Indiana all-stars the last three years, so she's taken a back seat to them," Scott says of Barnett's early high school days. "People are now seeing how good she is."

The only thing more impressive than the way she handles herself on the court is the way Barnett takes care of business in the classroom.

"I get A's and B's", says Barnett. "C's aren't allowed in my house."

Barnett will take her game to Green Bay next fall and join a perennial Top 25 program.
But before she does:

"I think we're going to be really good. Our goal is to win State!"
